Arena Deal Under Seattle City Council Scrutiny
Seattle City Council’s Top Dogs announced yesterday that they settled an agreement with Chris Hansen, hedge fund manager, to build a $490 million dollar sports arena in Sodo, and sent the proposal off to their individual councils to mull over and decide if the arena’s financial plans are feasible, and if the added traffic will affect Sodo’s industrial area. Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn and King County Executive Dow Constantine came out of the meeting with a positive outlook, with protection for taxpayers and a $800 million ballpark in private investments from Hansen and his investment group, ArenaCo. $290 million of the donations will go towards arena construction, and roughly $500 million will go to purchasing a National Basketball Association team; investors also hope the arena will attract a National Hockey League in the near future.
According to the Seattle Times, this deal could mark one of the largest private capital deals for a project like this in North America. While the arena has been widely accepted as a plausible deal for the city of Seattle, the memorandum of understanding (MOU) will now go to the city and city councils, whose members have openly voiced concerns for traffic congestion in the area’s already bustling sodo district, and loose financial plan. For more information regarding arena construction updates, follow the Seattle Times.

Pioneer Square Board Gives the OK On 25 Story Apartment Building
If you’ve heard, the rumors are true; the city board, who has been in charge of keeping the historic presentation of Pioneer Square alive, cast their votes and approved the modern sleek design of a 25-story apartment high rise just north of the Sodo stadiums. The all glass and steel tower will be sectioned into 2-4 story boxes, that will be positioned at varying angles. The building is part of a larger project named Stadium Place, in what previously was the North Parking Lot of Century Link Field.
The collaborative developers Daniels Real Estate and R.D. Merril presented the design back in December, and were met with mixed reviews, some stating that the design was far too modern to fit in with the historical appeal of Pioneer Square. But most members of the Pioneer Square Preservation Board actually had positive reviews of the design, and were all in agreeance with the new construction. The “South Tower” would be just a little shorter than the stadium, at 240 feet tall, and will have 333 units. Other projects are in the planning stages for the first phase of Stadium Place, such as a 20 story condo tower, and an office and hotel tower as well. For more information on these apartments, visit the Seattle Times.

Obama Visits Seattle After Endorsing Gay Marriage
After Obama’s risky move to endorse same-sex marriage yesterday, a stance bursting with political risk, he’s headed for Seattle to continue on with his series of re-election campaigns. Normally a visit to Seattle wouldn’t gain much National hype, but after his last announcement, we can expect the Presidential visit to give our city the spot light. Obama’s endorsement marks a milestone for the gay rights movement, as this was the first acceptance from a sitting President, and will be a significant wager in the ever sought electoral approval.
Air Force One is scheduled to arrive just before noon today in Seattle and the President’s first pit stop will be a $35,800-per-couple brunch at the Madrona home of Ann and Bruce Blume. Later on in the afternoon he will visit the Paramount Theater for another fundraiser, where guests can attended for $1,000 a ticket, or $5,000 bucks to include a photo reception with the President and performance by local lyrical legend Dave Matthews.

Seattle May Day Protesters Leave Their Mark on the City
When you stepped outside for lunch and saw the sun peeking out of the clouds on this lovely 1st day of May, you probably didn’t think you’d be tuning into NPR and hearing about how the “Black Bloc” protesters were already tearing apart the Seattle City limits. Around 11:50am peaceful protesters migrated from Seattle Central
Community College to Westlake Center to join the demonstrations taking place in the square such as a concert put on by Hiphop Occupy Seattle. Less than an hour later approximately 300 people including the “Black Bloc” folks armed with sticks, wooden riot batons and other makeshift weapons marched from the park west on Pike Street then south on Third Avenue. They began jumping on cars and sprawling out across the streets and causing significant property damage to retail spaces like Starbucks, Nordstrom, Niketown, and many other businesses. They did extensive damage to the 9th district court house and Wells Fargo Bank on 3rd Avenue. Officers were able to get to the crowds and an unknown number of arrests were made after these damages.
According to the Seattle Times, Nike has release a statement: “Nike supports free and peaceful protests. We do not condone violence. Fortunately, no one was injured at Niketown Seattle. We will re-open the store as quickly as possible.”

MOHAI Welcomes Newest Addition-The Seattle P-I Globe
Back in 2011, members of City Council and MOHAI suggested that the iconic P-I globe atop the old P-I headquarters on Elliot Ave. become an official landmark. After much delay, the Landmark Preservation Board voted to make the globe an official landmark in a unanimous vote last week. The owner of the old P-I headquarters building, Hearst Corp., donated the globe to MOHAI last month. No date of when the globe will be removed has been released. Emerald City Search Kicks off This Weekend
The much anticipated Emerald City Search scavenger’s hunt is to began this past weekend around the Seattle Center, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair. There will be two scavenger hunts in the city that are possibly the hardest Seattle-wide scrambles, with the highest rewards. The prize package this year is estimated to be worth around $9,000 and features hotel accommodations, memberships to attractions like EMP, the Pacific Science Center and even VIP concert tickets! Check out the full package here.
The Annual Emerald City Search began back in 2006 and is essentially a clue lead hunt special medallion, hidden around the city in plain sight, in a public location. The search always takes place over a maximum of 10 days, with one new clue announced every day. The start date of the Search will coincide with the kick off of the “Next Fifty” Opening on Saturday April 21st. The next scavenger hunt will be held in October, and will tie in with inspiration from the 1962 World’s Fair science and technology theme. For more information on past and future clues, visit Emerald City Search’s website.

1909 Seattle Historic Pergola Hit by Semi Driver
Last Thursday evening, the 1909 Pergola National Historic Landmark in Pioneer Square was damaged when a semi truck ran into it. Construction crews began working on repairs Friday on the cast iron roof, and construction is said to last another 3 weeks. The truck driver who caused the accident said eh was unfamiliar with the tight turns in the area, and had been following the
directions from his GPS navigation system when the incident happened. The Seattle Parks and Recreations Department now plans to install a post anchored into a room below the Pergola to avoid a similar accident from occurring in the area. Costs of this repair aren’t released just yet, but the city will plan to file an insurance claim against the truck driver.

Construction Begins on Waterfront Ferris Wheel
Back in 2010, the owner of Pier 57 on Seattle’s waterfront applied for a permit to build a new attraction-a Ferris wheel. Although I did not hear anything about the Ferris wheel plan for most of 2011, multiple news sources confirmed that crews began construction on the 175-foot tall waterfront wonder this week. Pier 57 owner Hal Griffith thought about constructing a Ferris wheel for over 20 years and took action as the viaduct replacement project was gaining steam. The Ferris wheel will extend 40 feet and be the second wheel of its size in the U.S. An estimated completion date has not yet been released.
