Belltown is known for it’s nightlife, so it’s fun when we get a new spot for cocktails and bar bites! We have two new bars in Belltown; Jupiter Bar opens on Thursday, September 14th and Commonwealth opened earlier this month.

Jupiter Bar has taken over an old warehouse for jewelry manufacturing at 2126 2nd Avenue, between Whiskey Bar and Blank Space Cafe near the colorful Belltown Corridor. The classic bar offering of beer and cocktails will be supplemented by a menu that focuses on oven-baked sandwiches. There will be dozens of games including pinball, pool, and arcade. Jupiter will be more than just a bar to augment Belltown’s nightlife – it’s also a gallery showcasing the work of over 18 artists. The grand opening is from 6 p.m. until 2 a.m. this Thursday.

Commonwealth is the latest offering from the folks behind Pintxo, which recently moved locations within the neighborhood. The new bar is located in the Bell Street alley between 3rd and 4th Avenues. Commonwealth is focused on whiskey, with Kentucky-inspired drinks and bites. There are several whiskey cocktails, beer and cider on draft, and a fun Boilermaker list to get more adventurous about your beverage. In the way of food, there’s a distinct Spanish influence from the bar’s older sibling, Pintxo.

Believe it or not, Summer is almost at an end, though we hope the sunshine decides to stay a while! But, it ain’t over till it’s over, as they say, and there’s still lots of fun to be had, especially at the 4th annual Belltown Crush Block Party!

 

Belltown’s favorite summertime bash is going on this year at Bell Street Park and promises to be a blast!

 

Enjoy tastes of fabulous locally crafted wines and beers and scrumptious bites from Pintxo, Mama’s Cantina, Road Dawg, and Belltown Brewing.

 

Sip and savor your way through the festival while enjoying live tunes and don’t miss out on the grape stomping competition, to really get you into the spirit of the event and the summer. It’s a local favorite!

This year’s event will take place on Saturday, August 26th from 2-5PM. Advanced tickets are $25 with proceeds going to benefit Plymouth Housing Group.

The Belltown space vacated by Spanish tapas restaurant Pintxo (recently relocated) is now home to sibling Bar Abajo, also a Spanish-influenced enterprise serving primarily gin and small plates.

Pintxo owners Cory and Amanda Chigbrow opened Bar Abajo last week focusing on “gins and tins,” with a long list of local and international gin options (a favorite drink of Spaniards with their elaborate “gin tonics”) plus beer, red sangria, and frozen cocktails. Soaking up the booze will be tinned fish, almonds, olives, cheese, and charcuterie. “Abajo” is Spanish for “below,” referencing the venue’s position underneath yet another bar owned by the Chigbrows, The Upstairs.

The Chigbrows have been busy: aside from the new Bar Abajo and Pintxo’s move to bigger digs, they’re also working on another restaurant called Commonwealth, which is aiming for a fall debut. That project is in progress at 2219 4th Ave. Diners will enter through a back alley off Bell Street and select from a menu of craft cocktails with Southern influences reflective of co-owner Amanda’s Kentucky roots. There are promises of an outdoor space with a fire pit in the slightly clandestine space.

Sunset Supper is poised to be a night to remember, and likely an event you’ll want to return to every year!

After Hula Hula had to relocate to Capitol Hill from its Uptown/Belltown location in March due to redevelopment, our ‘hood was going to miss its favorite tiki bar (and karaoke spot). Although its style is a bit more upscale and without the karaoke, Navy Strength is our new neighborhood tiki hotspot!

Anu and Chris Elford are slowly taking over Belltown. Following Anu’s venerable cocktail bar Rob Roy, the husband-and-wife team launched their James Beard-nominated beer bar/gastropub No Anchor just a few blocks down Second Avenue last fall. In late March, The Elfords introduced a third boozy sibling, dubbed Navy Strength, to the neighborhood. I recently sailed in to check out this tiki getaway neighboring No Anchor, and here are three impressions.

The Drinks: Browsing the bountiful and creative drink menu, split into three main sections, is like traveling across the Pacific Islands from past to present. The “classic tiki” section features impeccably made staples (none of that syrupy dreck that often passes for tiki drinks). The Mai Tai is lush and strong, and received hearty kudos from the man next to me at the bar who’d motorcycled up from Portland just to try it.

The “travel” section highlights drinks influenced by a particular region or country. It’s currently docked in India, and the Garam Masala Whisky Collins is not to be missed. It’s tasty and completely unique, with an under-a-palm-tree refreshing nature thanks to the addition of coconut soda.

The third “tropical” section, which features one of my favorite drinks, contains less-traditional tiki twists. Anchored with mezcal, the El Perro Grande includes butterfly pea flower, fresh lime and pineapple juices, and a little muddled jalapeno, all garnished with an orchid flower (Navy Strength’s garnishes are striking across the board). Chris worked on the drink for years before unveiling it. Its purple color, foaminess, citrus and smoke fit our Northwest spring like a grass skirt.

The Food: Chef Jeffrey Vance (also the chef for No Anchor, which earned a James Beard nomination) has developed a tight menu in keeping with Navy Strength’s island-and-ocean vibe. Our sage bartender says the rockfish ceviche is an early favorite among patrons, but the raw albacore tuna—served with cucumber yogurt and pickled red onions—has also garnered raves. A seafaring snacks menu features inspired creations like the Kumamoto oyster with passionfruit and black pepper granita. Sorry herbivores, but aside from two desserts there weren’t any veggie options during our visit.

The Space: Though they obviously revere tiki drinks and culture, the atmosphere at Navy Strength is subtly tiki, not veering anywhere near kitsch. A few paddles and masks, candles and shipboard lighting, and lots of wood (including beams from a 1940s prefab home) set the tone. The sizable U-shaped bar almost looks like a ship dry-docked on land. The space between the bar and the wood-and-subway-tiled back wall is huge (jellyfish tanks are on the way), giving the crack bar team plenty of room to mix complex cocktails quickly. I hear traditional flaming tiki drinks are coming, which will make that spacious setup even handier.

Instead of grabbing a window seat, moor yourself to one of the multicolored barstools and chat with the bartenders while they fill ceramic tiki mugs with tropical concoctions. You won’t regret it.
