If you work or live downtown, you’ve no doubt seen one of the many Metropolitan Improvement District ambassadors in their yellow jackets keeping our sidewalks and streets clean. But these ambassadors do more than just remove graffiti and sweep up leaves; members of the MID Outreach Team help homeless men and women find access to social services, and serve as familiar faces for those living on the streets downtown.
Since October they have partnered with the Seattle Union Gospel Mission to give free haircuts to those most in need. Mike, an ambassador who is also a certified barber, came up with the idea, and since the program began more than 60 haircuts have been given to men and women at the UGM. Mike and fellow ambassador Decloran offer the service every first and third Wednesday from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the downtown men’s shelter on 2nd Avenue.
So, next time you see one of our ambassadors braving the cold and rain on our downtown streets, give them an extra smile and thank them for what they do! And visit the Union Gospel Mission’s site to find out about how you can help our citizens in need.
